Appeal to Save Life of Satyagrahi Gangamaya Adhikari
                                                                                                              28 December 2020

Accountability Watch Committee (AWC) expresses its serious attention on the deteriorating health condition of Satyagrahi Gangamaya Adhikari who is on hunger strike for justice for her son Krishna Prasad Adhikari.

Demanding justice for their son Krishna Prasad Adhikari who was brutally killed by the then Maoists on 07June 2004 at Tandi, Bakulaur Chowk of Chitwan District, Satyagrahi Gangamaya Adhikari, 61, and her husband Nanda Prasad Adhikari were on hunger strike on different times for more than a decade. Her husband Nanda Prasad breathed his last on the 334th day of a hunger strike in September 2014. Demanding implementation of the commitment made by the government, Satyagrahi Gangamana Adhikari has started the 12th hunger strike from 23 December 2020 (today 8th day) at National Trauma Center, Bir Hospital and her health condition is deteriorating day by day. AWC is alarmed by the indifference shown by the government and the concerned authorities towards the deteriorating health condition of Satyagrahi Gangamaya Adhikari.

It is the duty of the state to address the citizen’s right to justice. Gangamaya’s struggle for justice and deteriorating health condition is not only a national concern but also a matter of international concern. Therefore, AWC makes an appeal to the government and authorities concerned to keep up the citizen’s trust on justice; not to seek excuses or pretentions on this sensitive issue, become serious about her deteriorating health condition and save her life by duly implementing the past commitments.

Dear Om, your email makes sad reading. Yes it is the duty of the state to address the citizen’s rights to justice, but we are now living in the heavy weight human rights implementors. “states”) Your government “must” honour its commitment on Satyagrahi family through comprehensive approach, providing services that will help Satyagrahi family to cope with its effects and perpetrators are also dealt with. A comprehensive approach to this issue has three major components namely: health, legal/justice system and social support. Please keep on raising awareness.

Thank you John Masuwa, your words and solidarity means a lot for us to fight against culture of impunity prevailing in Nepal and raise voices for rule of law and human rights…
