Arbitrary Detention in Zimbabwe During COVID-19 Control Measures

This week, through a media report in Zimbabwe we learned about the arbitrary detention and torture of two women from Cowdray Park suburb in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe by police officers.

The United Nations (UN) Independent Experts Working Group on Arbitrary Detention coincidentally this week also issued guidance to States on the enforcement of COVID-19 regulations.

United Nations Human Rights Independent Experts urged States that have imposed emergency COVID-19 measures to ensure that:

  • they respect their human rights obligations under national constitutions & international law

-publicly declare all measures

-measures are narrow and proportionate to the intended objective.
