[EAST AFRICA] Statement to the African Commission on Human and People's Rights: State of access to justice in East Africa during the COVID 19 pandemic

Dear Colleagues,

On the 24th of November 2020, Network members in East Africa, led by the International Commission of Jurists - Kenyan section (ICJ-Kenya) presented a statement before the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights ( ACHPR) on the state of access to justice in East Africa during the COVID 19 pandemic.

The COVID 19 measures in East Africa have raised a number of justice questions and human rights violations which have been discussed in detail during this webinar and documented in this endorsed communique. The communique is still open to endorsements, please sign on if you have not already.

The statement to the ACHPR urges Governments in the East Africa region to declare legal services as an essential service and in countries that do not have legal aid laws , hasten the development and implementation of the same. In addition, East Africa states have been called upon to consider effective justice responses that are people centred and that are needed to help societies manage the institutional, social, and economic fallout from the pandemic.
