Today, 26 June 2020, is the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture also known as the International Day Against Torture.
Centre Stage Media Arts Foundation (Zimbabwe) joins the world in commemorating the International Day Against Torture. This year, Zimbabwe is commemorating the day under unusual circumstances brought forth by COVID-19.
As we commemorate this day, we are concerned by the increase in torture cases in Zimbabwe perpetrated by state security agents on human rights defenders, political activists, journalists and ordinary citizens during the COVID-19 lockdown period.
We therefore urge the government of Zimbabwe to investigate all cases of torture and prosecute those who are found to be on the wrong side of the law. The government must also put in place measures to compensate all victims of torture in addition to providing rehabilitation services to survivors.
We further call upon the government of Zimbabwe to ratify the United Nations Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment [CAT] and its Optional Protocol.
