SADC paralegals, your decision makers are discussing the future of statelessness in the region this week

(Liesl Muller) #1

Government officials from all SADC countries are today meeting in Pretoria, South Africa, to discuss statelessness in the region.

All SADC countries have ratified the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, but the Charter does not contain a clear provision on nationality rights. The African Union is in the process of filling this gap by drafting the Protocol on the Specific Aspects on the Right to a Nationality and the Eradication of Statelessness in Africa.

African States are in the process of negotiating the final text of the Protocol. Follow this link to the latest update on the negotiations: STC on Migration, Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) | African Union

The Protocol is an important development in international law on citizenship rights and Africa is leading the way.
