Identifying Barriers to Equity and Environmental Justice in Research and Community Science

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Dear Colleagues

As part of the administration’s effort under Executive Order 13985 to identify barriers to implementing an equity and environmental justice agenda EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) is leading an agencywide effort to prepare a report on barriers to equity and environmental justice in environmental research and community science at the agency. ORD will present this information to the agency’s Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC) on July 6 for input. This BOSC consultation will include a public comment period. This is an opportunity to share your experiences and perspectives on the barriers to integrating an equity and environmental justice agenda in research and community science that you’ve identified through your work on community-based participatory research and citizen science initiatives over the years.

For more information about this consultation and the opportunity to offer public comment, see the listserv announcement below. Please feel free to contact Tom Tracy with clarification questions. Also, please feel free to share the opportunity with others in your network.

Regards,

Charles

Background: On January 20, 2021, President Biden issued Executive Order 13985: Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.

Agencies are to review programs and policies to assess whether underserved communities and their members face systemic barriers in accessing benefits and opportunities available pursuant to those policies and programs. EPA considers “Research and Community Science” to be a federal service and benefit for evaluation under this Executive Order.

EPA is holding this public meeting to consult with scientific members of the BOSC and to give the public opportunity to comment on systemic barriers to incorporating equity into research and community science.

Logistics: The meeting agenda and materials will be posted to https://www.epa.gov/bosc.
