nishmajethwa

I am facilitator, educator and community organiser working in the social justice and anti-oppression space in Mumbai and London. I provide support in organisational and community development, curriculum development and program development. I also facilitate workshops on a variety of substantive topics. I have a background in law and activism with specific experience working on gender rights, access to formal & alternative forms of justice, technology & harm, labour, and South Asian diaspora.

My expertise in tackling of gendered and racial oppression stems from over ten years professional experience in the field of human rights law, activism, facilitating and community organising, including work at the European Human Rights Advocacy Centre, the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute, South Asian Human Rights Documentation Centre, Aman Biradari, One Future Collective and Strategic Advocacy for Human Rights. I trained in law at Linklaters LLP, a UK-based law firm, and hold a BSc in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Warwick. I am also a qualified lawyer in the Senior Courts of England and Wales.

I am currently working to (1) envision and practice alternative strategies to address sexual violence in our communities in India with Alternative Justice (2) address technology-facilitated gendered violence through a global collective of gender and human rights activists, lawyers and researchers with End Cyber Abuse and (2) tackle inequity, trauma and harm in South Asian diaspora communities with a UK-based collective with The Rights Collective. In addition to this, I regularly consult, facilitate and run programming for a number of NGOs, charities, foundations and businesses on their human rights / social justice / anti-oppression work.

I am very open to exploring potential collaborations on gender rights, restorative and transformative justice, community accountability, healing justice, gender and digital rights, the South Asian Diaspora experience and more - feel free to reach out to me!
