REGISTRATION OPEN Asia Clinical Legal Education (CLE) Summer School 5-14 June 2015 Chiang Mai, Thailand

"We at Bridges Across Borders Southeast Asia Community Legal Education Initiative (BABSEA CLE), BABSEA CLE Foundation along with Southeast Asia Clinical Legal Education Association (SEACLEA) are pleased to announce that we will be holding a 10 day Training of Trainer workshop on the 5th - 14th June 2015. The workshop will take place in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Leading law teacher representatives who have demonstrated commitment to being engaged in assisting the development and strengthening of CLE programs at their universities from the region, will be working regionally across borders to collaboratively develop CLE programs, will be selected to participate. The Asia CLE Summer School is expected to involve approximately 60 participants including 50 trainees and 10 international/ regional CLE experts. The Asia CLE Summer School aims to reach participants from across the Asia region including many of BABSEA CLE’s current university partners. They will all come to share, learn, and to experience from each other. People attending the Asia CLE Summer School need to show their strong commitment and ability to be leaders for CLE programs in their home universities/countries.

The 10 day Asia CLE Summer School in Thailand workshop will focus on participants learning, and teaching various types of CLE program models. Law lecturers will learn types of proto-type/skeletal and adaptable CLE lessons, test them, revise them and potentially apply some of the teaching methods and teaching aids into their law classes.

The Asia CLE Summer School sessions will cover CLE program models, legal ethics, professional responsibility, pro bono, client based lawyering, interviewing skills, client in-take and listening skills, working on the development of an accredited CLE program for their legal curriculum, as well as monitoring and evaluating CLE programs. The sessions will be delivered by regional and international CLE experts, pro bono lawyers and researchers. All sessions will use interactive, participatory and learner based methodologies.

The organisers believe it is essential to bring representatives from throughout Asia and other international jurisdictions. The best way for the partners to learn how CLE and pro bono works, is to share experiences and learn from others. By interacting with experienced clinicians from established and newly established CLE programs and pro bono lawyers, regional lecturers will learn to understand how to develop and implement accredited CLE courses at the university level. The organisers want to facilitate this exchange as a means to ‘bridge borders’ throughout Asia and internationally. These relationships will be the start of an empowering initiative that will result in an abundance of information sharing and partnership building between Asian and international universities and the growth of local and international law firms doing pro bono in the region.
